A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting a glassblower at work, from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Glasblaezer, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed view into the workshop of a glassblower, capturing the physical demands and technical processes of the craft. The central figure stands, manipulating a blowpipe with focused attention, while a seated assistant works nearby. The background reveals the furnace, a source of heat and light, rendered with cross-hatching to suggest the texture of brickwork and the intensity of the fire.
The composition is typical of Dutch genre prints of the period, which often combined visual documentation of daily life with moralising or didactic text. Below the image, the Dutch verses provide a metaphorical interpretation of the glassblowing process, comparing the refinement of glass in the furnace to the spiritual preparation of the virtuous soul. The print reflects the period's interest in the mechanics of labour and the classification of societal roles.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of Dutch etching during this era. The artist employs varied line weights to distinguish between the foreground figures, the tools of the trade, and the architectural elements of the workshop. The inclusion of the text as an integral part of the print layout is characteristic of the book illustration traditions of the time. This piece offers a glimpse into the industrial history of the Netherlands, documenting the tools and attire associated with glass production. It serves as a record of the artisanal practices that supported the Dutch economy, presented with the clarity and narrative focus common to the print culture of the late seventeenth century.
