A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of armoured cavalry and trumpeters.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg captures a segment of a ceremonial procession, documenting the military and aristocratic pageantry of the early sixteenth century. Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the Low Countries, produced a series of prints depicting the funeral procession of Emperor Charles V, or similar state entries, which were common subjects for printmakers of the period. The work displays a line of mounted soldiers, or landsknechten, accompanied by trumpeters. The figures are rendered with attention to the specific fashion of the era, including plumed hats and ornate horse trappings.
Above the riders, the composition includes heraldic shields and a cartouche containing French text, which identifies the figures as associated with the lineage of Ferdinand the Catholic and Philip the Handsome. The inclusion of these coats of arms provides a clear link to the dynastic politics of the Habsburgs. The etching technique allows for precise detail in the armour and the decorative patterns on the horses, reflecting the technical proficiency of the artist. The Latin inscription at the base, 'CATAPHRACTARVM EQVITVM ARMATAE PHA', refers to the armoured cavalry, situating the scene within a formal military context.
This print functions as a historical record of sixteenth-century ceremonial life. The arrangement of the figures across the horizontal plane creates a sense of movement, typical of the frieze-like compositions used in processional art. The work remains a valuable example of the intersection between political propaganda and artistic production in the Northern Renaissance, demonstrating how print media disseminated images of power and status across Europe. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period, where clarity of form and heraldic accuracy were paramount for the intended audience of scholars and courtiers.
