A striking woodcut by Paul Gauguin, depicting Tahitian figures in a simplified, graphic style that reflects his interest in primitive forms.
Auti te Pape, which translates from Tahitian as Women at the River, is a woodcut produced by Paul Gauguin during his first stay in Tahiti. This work reflects his interest in the primitive and the exotic, themes that occupied his creative output after he left France for the South Pacific. The composition features two figures: a seated woman in the foreground and a second figure standing in the background, partially obscured by the surrounding environment.
Gauguin utilised the woodcut medium to explore stark contrasts between light and shadow. The surface of the print is marked by rough, gouged lines that define the forms of the figures and the textured ground. Unlike his paintings, which often rely on saturated colour, this monochrome print relies on the graphic quality of the woodblock. The figures appear somewhat flattened, a stylistic choice that aligns with his rejection of traditional Western perspective in favour of a more decorative, symbolic approach.
The title is inscribed directly into the block, a common practice for Gauguin, who often integrated text into his visual compositions to provide context or evoke a specific atmosphere. The scene captures a moment of daily life, yet the treatment of the forms suggests a departure from realism. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their bodies rendered with simplified, heavy contours. This print demonstrates Gauguin's technical experimentation with wood engraving, a medium he adopted to achieve a raw, direct aesthetic. The work remains a primary example of his attempt to synthesise European artistic traditions with the visual culture he encountered in Polynesia. It offers a glimpse into his process of translating his experiences into a graphic format, focusing on the interplay of black ink against the paper surface.
