A 1942 Soviet propaganda poster by El Lissitzky, featuring photomontage techniques to encourage industrial production for the war effort.
Produced in 1942, this poster represents the later output of El Lissitzky, an artist known for his earlier contributions to the Suprematist and Constructivist movements. By the second world war, his aesthetic shifted to accommodate the requirements of Soviet state propaganda. The composition employs a photomontage technique, combining portraits of factory workers with depictions of military hardware, specifically a tank and an aircraft. The background shows a busy industrial interior, linking the domestic labour force directly to the war effort.
The design is structured with bold, geometric blocks of red and black, typical of the artist's graphic sensibility. The text, written in Russian, lists various armaments before concluding with the titular slogan. The juxtaposition of the workers' faces with the machinery creates a clear narrative of national unity and industrial output. Lissitzky uses the red star, a symbol of the Soviet Union, to provide a sharp colour contrast against the monochrome photographic elements. This work demonstrates the application of avant-garde graphic design principles to the urgent needs of wartime communication. It remains a clear example of how the artist adapted his visual language to serve political objectives during a period of national crisis.
