A detailed Mughal miniature depicting a royal procession, featuring a charioteer and musicians, from a 17th-century Razm-nama manuscript.
This exquisite miniature originates from a manuscript of the Razm-nama, the Persian translation of the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The work reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and indigenous Indian styles that defined the Mughal court atelier during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
The composition depicts a royal figure seated within a chariot, accompanied by a retinue of musicians and footmen. The scene is set against a backdrop of stylised rocky outcrops and a distant hilltop structure, typical of the period's approach to spatial representation. The artist, Yusuf Ali, employs a flattened perspective, allowing for the clear arrangement of figures across the pictorial plane. The musicians, including a drummer mounted on a camel and others playing long horns, add a sense of movement and auditory life to the static scene.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the Mughal school. The use of opaque watercolour and gold pigment provides a luminosity that remains preserved despite the age of the manuscript. The figures are rendered with fine brushwork, capturing the specific textiles and headgear of the era. The borders, decorated with delicate floral motifs, frame the central narrative, which is punctuated by blank cartouches intended for text. This piece offers a view into the cultural exchange facilitated by the Mughal court, where ancient Indian epics were translated and illustrated through the lens of Persian aesthetic conventions. The attention to detail in the clothing, the musical instruments, and the geological formations provides a window into the visual culture of the early 1600s in South Asia.
