whales-and-whale-oil-joko-roku-hasegawa-settan
Whales and Whale Oil (Jokō roku) - Hasegawa Settan

A detailed woodblock print by Hasegawa Settan documenting whale anatomy and coastal whaling practices during the Edo period.

This woodblock print originates from the Edo period, a time when Japanese artists frequently documented the natural world through detailed, observational studies. Hasegawa Settan, a painter and illustrator active in the early 19th century, produced this work as part of a broader effort to catalogue marine life and industrial practices. The composition is divided into distinct sections, separating the anatomical study of the whales from the wider coastal environment where whaling activities occurred.

The print displays a clear, analytical approach to its subject. The whales are rendered with attention to their physical features, including the baleen plates and fins, which are labelled with Japanese text to provide educational context. The upper portions of the pages depict the maritime setting, showing small boats navigating the waters near a coastline. This combination of technical illustration and topographical representation is characteristic of the encyclopaedic interests prevalent in Japanese publishing during this era.

Technically, the work relies on the precision of the woodblock medium. The lines are thin and controlled, allowing for the fine detail required in scientific documentation. The contrast between the dark, solid forms of the whales and the lighter, linear depiction of the sea and mountains creates a balanced visual hierarchy. This print serves as a record of historical knowledge regarding marine biology and the economic importance of whaling in coastal Japan. It reflects the period's interest in categorising the physical world, providing a glimpse into the intersection of art, science, and industry in pre-modern Japan.

You might also like

An Actor Beside Water - Utagawa Toyokuni I — Utagawa Toyokuni I
Oiso: Saigyo's Hut at Shigitatsu Marsh - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Whales-and-Whale-Oil-Jok-roku-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791443878357.jpg?v=1791447938
