The composition centres on Admiral Adam Duncan, who stands on the deck of his flagship, HMS Venerable, receiving the sword of the defeated Dutch Admiral, Jan Willem de Winter. The scene captures the immediate conclusion of the conflict, with the smoke of battle still visible in the background and the physical toll of the engagement evident in the postures of the sailors.

James Ward, better known for his animal and rural subjects, demonstrates his technical skill in this large-scale print. The mezzotint process allows for a wide range of tonal values, which Ward employs to create dramatic lighting effects across the deck. The contrast between the formal, upright stance of the officers and the weary, active sailors creates a narrative of both victory and the harsh reality of naval warfare. The print serves as a record of a significant moment in British maritime history, documenting the surrender of the Dutch fleet and the consolidation of British naval dominance during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Ward worked from a painting by John Hoppner to produce this engraving. The print reflects the conventions of late eighteenth-century history painting, where the focus remains on the heroic conduct of the commander. The inclusion of specific naval details, such as the rigging, the cannons, and the attire of the crew, provides a sense of authenticity to the event. This work remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production during this period, where painters and engravers worked together to disseminate images of national importance to a wider public audience.

You might also like

The Immortality of Nelson by Benjamin West
Scipio and a Slave by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
James Ward prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Victory-of-Lord-Duncan_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119719020.jpg?v=1792397946
