Cocteau, a polymath of the French avant-garde, frequently returned to the motif of the human profile throughout his career. In this composition, two faces confront one another in a near-symmetrical arrangement. The artist employs a single, continuous black ink line to define the contours of the foreheads, noses, and chins, creating a visual puzzle where the negative space between the profiles forms the central axis of the image.

The application of yellow crayon provides a deliberate contrast to the starkness of the ink. Cocteau uses this colour to fill the upper triangular forehead section and the area surrounding the lips, drawing the eye to the point of contact between the two figures. The eyes are rendered with simple, circular loops, maintaining the minimalist aesthetic that defines much of his graphic output. By stripping away extraneous detail, Cocteau focuses the viewer on the geometry of the human form and the tension inherent in the proximity of the two subjects.

Cocteau's graphic style often prioritised speed and spontaneity, reflecting his background in poetry and film. This piece is representative of his later work, where he refined his visual language to its most essential components. The signature and date in the lower right corner confirm the work's provenance within his mid-century period. The composition avoids traditional shading or perspective, opting instead for a flat, graphic quality that aligns with the broader modernist interest in abstraction and symbolic representation. This print captures the clarity and wit that defined Cocteau's approach to visual art, offering a clean, balanced addition to a contemporary interior.

You might also like

Illustration for Jean Genet’s 'Querelle de Brest' by Jean Cocteau
Dessin érotique by Jean Cocteau
More by Jean Cocteau →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Profile-Faces-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122746116.jpg?v=1792211376
