The painting captures a formal military assembly, focusing on the contrast between the central Mexican officer and the accompanying cavalry unit. The Mexican Major is depicted in traditional attire, mounted on a light-coloured horse, while the soldiers beside him wear dark uniforms with red accents.

Remington utilised his experience as an illustrator to provide a clear, narrative quality to the scene. The composition is organised horizontally, with the line of soldiers extending into the distance, suggesting a vast, arid environment. The dry, dusty ground and the muted tones of the distant hills reflect the harsh conditions often associated with the border regions of the period. The artist pays close attention to the details of the tack, the uniforms, and the posture of the horses, which were subjects he studied extensively throughout his career.

This work demonstrates Remington's ability to render light and shadow in an open, sun-drenched space. The shadows cast by the horses onto the ground provide a sense of depth and time of day. While the subject matter is military, the focus remains on the individual figures and their equipment. The painting offers a view into the visual culture of the late 19th-century frontier, documenting the attire and organisation of the forces present in the region. Remington's technique here is precise, favouring clarity of form over atmospheric abstraction, which aligns with his background in magazine illustration and his desire to document the realities of the American frontier.

You might also like

Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Mexican-Major_Poster_CompositorV1_1790917287358.jpg?v=1790920819
