This work captures a group of men straining to push a heavy dory into the sea. The composition focuses on the physical exertion of the figures, their bodies angled against the weight of the boat. Bellows employs broad, confident brushwork to define the forms, prioritising the energy of the scene over fine detail.

The colour palette is dominated by deep blues and teals in the sky and water, which contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the men's clothing and the bright white and red of the boat. The sky is heavy with dark, rolling clouds, suggesting an impending storm or the volatile nature of the Atlantic coast. This atmospheric tension is a recurring element in Bellows's marine works from this era.

Unlike his urban scenes of New York, which often focused on the grit of city life, his Maine paintings explore the relationship between humanity and the natural environment. The figures appear as part of the coastal landscape, their labour tied to the rhythms of the sea. Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School, a group known for documenting the realities of American life. While this painting departs from the urban subject matter typically associated with the movement, it retains the directness and vigour characteristic of his style. The work remains a clear example of his ability to convey movement and weight through paint application, capturing a specific moment of collective effort against the backdrop of a vast, indifferent ocean.

You might also like

Breaking Surf by George Luks
Breezing Up (A Fair Wind) by Winslow Homer
George Bellows artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Big-Dory_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114156980.jpg?v=1792134282
