The onnagata, a male actor specialising in female characters, was a central figure in the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan. Shunjō, a member of the Katsukawa school, captures the actor with the characteristic focus on individual likeness and theatrical gesture that defined the school's approach to actor portraiture.

The composition presents the actor in a domestic interior, standing beside a mirror stand. The figure wears a layered kimono, rendered with muted olive and red tones, featuring geometric patterns that contrast with the simpler background. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the actor's facial features with clarity. The use of a limited colour palette, typical of the period, directs attention to the actor's posture and the specific details of the costume. A bamboo blind hangs in the background, providing a sense of depth and setting the scene within a private space.

Katsukawa Shunjō was active during the latter half of the eighteenth century. His work reflects the stylistic shift away from the idealised, doll-like figures of earlier ukiyo-e artists towards a more grounded representation of actors. This print serves as a record of the performance styles and fashion of the time. The inclusion of the mirror stand suggests a moment of preparation or reflection, a common trope in prints depicting actors off-stage or in character. The print is a representative example of the yakusha-e genre, which documented the popular culture of the kabuki theatre for a wide audience of urban residents.

You might also like

Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge - Keisai Eisen — Keisai Eisen
Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Actor-Segawa-Kikunojo-3rd-in-a-Female-Role_Poster_CompositorV1_1791336924249.jpg?v=1791337692
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/sv/products/the-actor-segawa-kikunojo-3rd-in-a-female-role-katsukawa-shunjo
