The artist, Tōsai, presents the figure in a traditional standing pose, dressed in the formal robes of a high-ranking court official. He holds a sprig of plum blossoms, a motif closely associated with the legend of Tenjin, who famously composed poetry about the plum tree before his exile. The figure is rendered with precise, controlled ink lines that define the folds of his garments and the contours of his face, reflecting the stylistic conventions of Muromachi period religious portraiture.

The composition is balanced and vertical, typical of the hanging scroll format. Above the figure, a calligraphic inscription provides context and reverence, linking the visual representation to the literary traditions surrounding the deity. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and subtle ink washes, creates a sense of solemnity and age. The silk support shows signs of wear, which adds to the historical character of the piece. The surrounding mount features a repeating plum blossom pattern, reinforcing the thematic connection to the subject. This work functions as a devotional object, intended for contemplation within a domestic or temple setting. The artist captures a moment of quiet dignity, focusing on the scholarly identity of the subject rather than his later, more wrathful manifestations in Japanese folklore. The attention to detail in the facial features, particularly the beard and expression, suggests a high level of technical skill in portraiture during this era.

You might also like

Lions at the Stone Bridge of Mount Tiantai - Soga Shōhaku — Soga Shōhaku
Poems on Wind from Japanese and Chinese and Poems to Sing - Horie Yorinao — Horie Yorinao

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Tenjin-Traveling-to-China_Poster_CompositorV1_1791340802815.jpg?v=1791342203
