The composition is set against a deep indigo background, which provides a stark contrast to the white and blue porcelain vessels. The teapot itself is decorated with floral motifs, specifically chrysanthemums, and features calligraphic inscriptions within a central panel. The artist employs a clean, precise line quality to define the shape of the ceramic ware, capturing the subtle variations in the blue underglaze patterns.

Sometsuke refers to the blue and white porcelain style that gained popularity in Japan during the Edo period. The print captures the aesthetic of these objects, often used in the refined tea ceremonies of the time. The two cups are rendered with different surface treatments: one displays a wave pattern, while the other shows a smooth, gradient blue finish. The overall arrangement is flat, focusing on the graphic quality of the objects rather than creating a sense of three-dimensional space. The print reflects the Japanese appreciation for functional beauty and the quiet contemplation associated with the consumption of tea.

Yamada Hōgyoku demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the woodblock medium, particularly in the handling of the blue colour blocks and the fine lines of the calligraphy. The work is a clear example of the genre of still life prints that documented the material culture of the period. By isolating the objects against a solid, dark field, the artist draws the viewer's attention to the form and decoration of the ceramics. This print is a study in balance and restraint, characteristic of the artistic traditions that influenced the development of Japanese printmaking.

You might also like

Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge - Keisai Eisen — Keisai Eisen
Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Sometsuke-Sencha-Teapot-and-Cups_Poster_CompositorV1_1791349308383.jpg?v=1791355806
