Painted around 1588, the work presents a stark, psychological study of the artist. The composition is stripped of extraneous detail, focusing entirely on the weathered features of the subject. Tintoretto employs a dark, moody palette, typical of his mature style, where light emerges from shadow to define the contours of his face and the texture of his beard.

The artist gazes directly at the viewer with a weary, yet piercing intensity. His expression conveys the weight of a long career spent navigating the competitive Venetian art world. The brushwork is economical, prioritising the capture of character over polished finish. A subtle inscription, 'IPSVE', appears on the right side, confirming the identity of the sitter. This painting is held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Unlike the idealised portraits of his contemporaries, this work offers a raw account of ageing. The contrast between the deep, near-black background and the illuminated skin tones creates a sense of isolation. It is a document of the artist's own perception of his mortality and professional identity. The lack of decorative elements ensures that the viewer remains engaged with the subject's humanity. This print reproduces the tonal depth and the specific handling of paint found in the original canvas, providing a clear view of the master's technique in his twilight years.

You might also like

Self-portrait by Titian
Portrait of a Young Man of the Renialme Family - Tintoretto by Domenico Tintoretto
More by Tintoretto →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120804809.jpg?v=1792201568
