Executed in pencil, the drawing captures the young Tàpies with a direct, searching gaze. The composition focuses on the head and shoulders, with the artist presenting himself in a simple, unadorned manner.

The handling of the medium shows a clear interest in tonal modelling and the structure of the human face. Unlike his later works, which often incorporated sand, dust, or found objects to create textured surfaces, this portrait relies on the traditional application of graphite to define form and shadow. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the psychological presence of the subject.

Born in Barcelona, Tàpies began his artistic training during a period of significant political and social upheaval in Spain. This self-portrait reflects the influence of early twentieth-century European figurative traditions. The lines are deliberate, mapping the contours of the face with a precision that suggests a rigorous study of his own features. The work provides a necessary context for understanding his later shift toward informel art and matter painting. By examining this early drawing, one can observe the technical foundation that supported his subsequent experiments with non-traditional materials. It is a quiet, introspective piece that documents the artist at the start of his career, capturing a sense of youthful gravity and artistic intent. The drawing remains a significant document for those interested in the development of Tàpies as a draughtsman and his initial engagement with the human form.

You might also like

Self-Portrait by Ion Theodorescu-Sion
Self-Portrait by Arshile Gorky

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121680517.jpg?v=1792205226
