This work, dated to 1840, reflects the scholarly ideal of withdrawal from public life to engage in refined pursuits. The composition features two tall, slender trees that dominate the vertical space, providing a canopy for the figures gathered below. The brushwork is restrained, favouring clarity and balance over decorative excess.

The scene depicts a group of figures engaged in the ritual of tea preparation. The artist employs a muted palette, using subtle washes of ink and light colour to define the forms of the trees and the rocky terrain. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, yet their postures convey a sense of quiet contemplation and social harmony. The negative space surrounding the figures and trees is intentional, creating a sense of openness and airiness characteristic of the literati aesthetic.

Chikutō was known for his theoretical writings on painting, and this work demonstrates his adherence to the principles of the Southern School of Chinese painting. The focus is on the expression of the artist's inner state through the depiction of nature and scholarly activities. The inscription in the upper right corner provides context, identifying the date and the specific setting. This print captures the essence of the original silk hanging scroll, preserving the delicate tonal transitions and the calligraphic quality of the brushstrokes. It is a work that invites close observation, rewarding the viewer with its subtle details and balanced arrangement of elements.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Painting Album of Sublime Talent (Two Figures Dancing) - Utagawa Toyohiro — Utagawa Toyohiro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Sampling-Tea-beneath-the-Wu-Trees_Poster_CompositorV1_1790838217903.jpg?v=1790839187
