Aarts, a professor at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, was known for his technical mastery of graphic media, particularly lithography and woodcut. His work often explored themes of human struggle and religious narrative, rendered through a distinctively modern lens.

The composition utilises the stark contrast inherent to the woodcut medium. Aarts employs bold, angular lines to define the figure of Moses, whose body is contorted in a dynamic, almost sculptural pose. The heavy black ink blocks create a sense of weight and tension, while the unprinted paper provides the necessary light to model the form. The geometric simplification of the drapery and the facial features reflects the influence of early twentieth-century Expressionism, where the artist prioritises emotional intensity over anatomical realism.

In this print, the tablets are positioned above the head of the prophet, creating a sense of monumental burden. The surrounding space is filled with sharp, jagged shapes that suggest a rocky or mountainous environment, further grounding the scene in the narrative of Mount Sinai. Aarts avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interplay between shadow and light to convey the gravity of the moment. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to reduce a complex narrative to its essential visual components, resulting in a work that is both disciplined and expressive. This piece is representative of the Dutch graphic tradition of the period, which sought to revitalise historical subjects through contemporary printmaking techniques.

You might also like

Naakte vrouw (Nude Woman) - Meijer Bleekrode — Meijer Bleekrode
Head of a child - Paul Klee — Paul Klee

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mozes-met-de-tafelen-der-wet_Poster_CompositorV1_1790846116904.jpg?v=1790847122
