Bartsch, who is widely recognised for his comprehensive catalogue of prints, applied his expertise in engraving and etching to capture the quiet stillness of rural life. The composition focuses on a cow resting in the shade of a gnarled tree, a subject that reflects the European interest in pastoral themes during the late eighteenth century.

The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the animal's hide and the rugged bark of the tree. The shading is achieved through careful cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth without relying on excessive detail. The background features a suggestion of foliage, providing a sense of place while keeping the attention fixed on the central figure. The work is signed in the plate, a common practice for printmakers of the period, and reflects the disciplined approach to form that defined Bartsch's output.

As a scholar, Bartsch possessed a deep understanding of the history of printmaking, and this work shows his appreciation for the techniques of earlier masters. The etching is characterised by its clarity and balance, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation in favour of a direct, observational style. It is a representative example of the animalier tradition, where the study of livestock was treated with the same attention as more traditional subjects. The print is presented on high-quality paper, preserving the fine lines of the original etching plate. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth-century European art world, where technical proficiency and natural observation were held in high regard.

You might also like

Liggende koe bij een hek by Paulus Potter
Staande koe bij wolkenlucht by Marcus de Bye

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Liggende-koe-bij-een-boom_Poster_CompositorV1_1791794303556.jpg?v=1791795407
