The composition focuses on a mounted cavalryman in the foreground, depicted in profile, while a larger troop follows behind him. The artist employs a linear technique, using varied hatching to define the musculature of the horses and the texture of the soldiers' uniforms. The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythmic motion of the horses and the posture of the riders.

Schermer, known for his work in the nineteenth century, often explored themes related to rural life and military subjects. His approach to etching demonstrates a technical proficiency in creating depth through line weight rather than tonal washes. The sky is rendered with horizontal lines that suggest a vast, open atmosphere, contrasting with the more energetic, cross-hatched ground where the horses tread. The figures are rendered with a sense of immediacy, suggesting a sketch-like quality that captures the essence of the scene without excessive detail.

This print offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the period, where the etching medium was frequently used to document military life and equestrian subjects. The work is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the clarity of the draughtsmanship to convey the narrative. It is a piece that rewards close observation, particularly in the way the artist manages the density of lines to create shadow and form. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the character of the original plate work.

You might also like

Anatomische les - David van der Kellen — David van der Kellen
Zware tijden (een keizerprent) - Marius Bauer — Marius Bauer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landschap-met-cavaleristen_Poster_CompositorV1_1790851335737.jpg?v=1790851909
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/sv/products/landschap-met-cavaleristen-cornelis-albertus-johannes-schermer
