Kihō was a student of the Shijō school, a movement that prioritised direct observation of nature and a more naturalistic approach to traditional Japanese painting. The Shijō style is characterised by its soft brushwork and a focus on the essential qualities of the subject, moving away from the rigid formalities of earlier academic schools.

The image depicts two rabbits, rendered with a focus on texture and form. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to suggest the softness of the fur, while the composition spans two pages of the album. This format allows for a sense of movement and interaction between the two animals, despite the physical divide of the book binding. The use of minimal colour, restricted to the subtle pink of the rabbit's eye and the muted tones of the ink, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where restraint was often considered a mark of quality.

Kawamura Kihō was known for his ability to capture the character of animals through simple, yet precise, observation. His work in the Kihō gafu serves as a record of the artistic techniques prevalent in early nineteenth-century Japan. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the woodblock carvers who translated the artist's original sketches into a reproducible format. By focusing on the physical presence of the rabbits, the artist provides a clear example of the Shijō school's interest in the natural world. This piece is a representative example of the genre of Japanese sketchbooks, which were intended for both instruction and appreciation by a wider audience of art enthusiasts and students during the Edo period.

You might also like

Poet Ono no Komachi Standing Beneath Willow by a Stream - Torii Kiyonaga — Torii Kiyonaga
Example of Peaceful Empire – Utagawa Kunisada III — Utagawa Kunisada III

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Kih-Picture-Album-Kih-gafu-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791365880917.jpg?v=1791368476
