head-of-a-martyr-odilon-redon
Head of a Martyr - Odilon Redon

A haunting charcoal study by French Symbolist Odilon Redon, depicting a serene, severed head resting in a vessel.

Odilon Redon, a central figure in the Symbolist movement, produced this work during his 'noirs' period. This phase is defined by his exclusive use of charcoal and lithography to explore the subconscious, dreams, and the macabre. The image depicts a severed head resting within a shallow vessel, a motif that draws upon the biblical narrative of John the Baptist. Redon strips away narrative context, leaving only the quiet, detached presence of the head against a void-like background.

The technique relies on a subtle manipulation of light and shadow. Redon uses the charcoal to create a soft, atmospheric texture that obscures precise anatomical detail, favouring an ethereal quality instead. The closed eyes and serene expression suggest a state of transcendence rather than physical suffering. By removing the subject from a specific time or place, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the psychological weight of the image. The vessel acts as a pedestal, elevating the head and reinforcing the sense of ritual or stillness. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to render the intangible through monochromatic tones, focusing on the evocative power of shadow and form. It is a characteristic example of his interest in the mysterious and the dreamlike, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur.

You might also like

Het visioen van Beatrice Cenci - David Pièrre Giottino Humbert de Superville — David Pièrre Giottino Humbert de Superville
Giant's Tomb - Nicholas Roerich — Nicholas Roerich

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Head-of-a-Martyr_Poster_CompositorV1_1791917830157.jpg?v=1791918111
