fragment-of-a-cover-unknown-artist
Fragment of a Cover - Unknown Artist

A detailed reproduction of a Kamakura period gold maki-e lacquer box lid, featuring fine architectural motifs and figures on a black ground.

This piece represents the refined tradition of Japanese lacquerware from the Kamakura period. The surface displays the maki-e technique, where gold powder is applied to wet lacquer to create decorative motifs. The design features architectural elements and figures, rendered with precise, thin lines that define the structural forms against the dark, polished ground. The composition relies on a grid-like pattern, which provides a sense of order and balance to the scene.

Lacquerware of this era often served as functional objects for the aristocracy or religious institutions. The application of gold on black lacquer creates a high-contrast visual effect, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences. The figures are depicted in a stylised manner, consistent with the narrative art of the time, which often drew from literary sources or courtly life. The box lid demonstrates the technical skill required to maintain consistency across a flat surface, ensuring the gold powder adheres to the lacquer base without blurring the fine details.

This print captures the texture and metallic quality of the original object. It offers a view into the material culture of medieval Japan, where everyday items were elevated through careful craftsmanship and the use of precious materials. The geometric patterns surrounding the figures suggest a sophisticated approach to space, balancing the representational elements with decorative borders. This object remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved by lacquer artisans during the 13th century, reflecting the intersection of utility and artistic expression in historical Japanese design.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Samarkande (Plate 6, Compositions in the Oriental Style) - Émile-Allain Séguy — Émile-Allain Séguy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fragment-of-a-Cover_Poster_CompositorV1_1790867698730.jpg?v=1790868210
