flowering-branches-yu-xing
Flowering Branches - Yu Xing

A traditional Qing Dynasty hanging scroll painting by Yu Xing, featuring delicate flowering branches and fish rendered in ink and colour on silk.

This work by Yu Xing, a painter active during the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the traditional bird-and-flower genre. The composition features a vertical orientation, typical of hanging scrolls, where flowering branches extend from a rocky outcrop. The artist employs a delicate application of ink and colour on silk, capturing the soft, pendulous blossoms and the textured leaves of the plant. Below the flora, two fish swim in a shallow space, providing a sense of movement and depth to the lower portion of the frame.

Yu Xing was known for his technical precision and his ability to render natural subjects with a balance of observation and stylistic convention. The muted, earthy tones of the silk background provide a neutral ground that allows the subtle pinks of the flowers and the red of the fish to emerge without overwhelming the viewer. The brushwork remains controlled, reflecting the disciplined training expected of court-associated painters of the period. The arrangement of the branches suggests a natural growth pattern, yet it is carefully composed to maintain the equilibrium of the scroll format.

In this piece, the artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the interaction between the terrestrial elements above and the aquatic life below. The work serves as an example of the refined aesthetic values prevalent in eighteenth-century Chinese painting, where the observation of nature is filtered through established artistic traditions. The choice of silk as a medium contributes to the soft, aged appearance of the work, which has acquired a characteristic patina over time. This print captures the original composition, preserving the balance between the negative space and the detailed botanical and animal subjects.

You might also like

Flowers and Birds - Zhang Ruoai — Zhang Ruoai
Birds on a Flowering Branch - Watanabe Seitei — Watanabe Shōtei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Flowering-Branches_Poster_CompositorV1_1790797444761.jpg?v=1790802596
