The subject is shown in profile, dressed in classical drapery that flows around her form, suggesting movement or levitation. She holds a small pitcher in her raised hand, pouring liquid into a chalice held in her other hand. A wreath of leaves and berries adorns her hair, adding a naturalistic element to the composition.

Sturm, an Austrian artist known for his decorative work and architectural ornamentation, employs a refined technique here. The use of gouache and watercolour allows for subtle gradations of light on the fabric of the gown, contrasting with the deep, solid background. The figure's posture is graceful, reflecting the stylistic preferences of the late nineteenth century, where classical motifs were often reinterpreted through an Art Nouveau lens. The focus remains on the fluid lines of the drapery and the precise rendering of the figure's anatomy.

This piece functions as an allegorical study, likely intended for a larger decorative scheme or mural project. Sturm was frequently commissioned for public buildings in Vienna and the Netherlands, and his ability to create figures that fit harmoniously into architectural settings is evident in the balanced, vertical composition of this drawing. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft creams, ochres, and pale blues, ensures the figure remains the primary focus against the dark ground. The work provides insight into the academic training and decorative sensibilities of the period, demonstrating a mastery of form and light that characterises Sturm's broader body of work.

You might also like

Poisson et Algues, Papier Peint / Pigeon et Pavots, Bordure de Vitrail - Maurice Pillard Verneuil — Maurice Pillard Verneuil
The Autumn - Alphonse Mucha — Alphonse Mucha

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Floating-Female-Figure-Pouring-a-Cup_Poster_CompositorV1_1790853462065.jpg?v=1790854544
