Komai Genki, a student of Maruyama Okyo, applied the principles of the Maruyama-Shijo school to this composition. The work displays a bird perched upon a trailing morning glory vine. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the negative space of the paper to define the composition. This approach reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where simplicity and observation of nature took precedence over decorative excess.

The bird is rendered with precise, controlled lines, capturing its posture and plumage with accuracy. The morning glory leaves and flowers are depicted in soft, muted tones, suggesting a delicate quality. The composition is asymmetrical, a common feature in Japanese art, which guides the eye across the page while maintaining a sense of balance. The inclusion of the artist's signature and seal in the lower right corner confirms the provenance of the piece within the context of late eighteenth-century Japanese print culture.

Unlike the more stylised works of the Ukiyo-e tradition, this print leans towards a naturalistic representation of flora and fauna. The focus remains on the quiet interaction between the bird and the plant. The paper texture and the subtle ink application provide a tactile quality to the print, characteristic of high-quality woodblock production from this era. This piece serves as an example of the intersection between literary culture and visual art, as the prints were often produced to accompany poetry collections. The work remains a quiet study of form and movement, demonstrating the technical skill involved in woodblock printing during the Edo period.

You might also like

Yugasan in Bizan Province - Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Throwing the Shuttle - Suzuki Harunobu — Suzuki Harunobu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Collected-Haiku-Poems-Hokku-sh-_Poster_CompositorV1_1790827837873.jpg?v=1790828659
