The work presents a Chinese poem that celebrates the virtues of a reclusive life, a common theme among scholars and clergy during the Edo period. The text is rendered in a fluid, cursive script that prioritises the rhythm of the artist's hand over rigid formal precision. Each character displays a variation in ink density, moving from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, drier strokes that reveal the texture of the paper beneath.

The composition is balanced through the vertical arrangement of the columns, which guide the viewer's eye from the top right downward. The spacing between the characters is deliberate, allowing the negative space to function as an active element of the design. This approach to calligraphy reflects the Zen influence on the artist, where the act of writing is an extension of meditative practice. The ink work is punctuated by red seals, which provide a subtle contrast to the monochromatic palette and confirm the authenticity of the piece.

Jakugon Taijō was a figure associated with the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism. His calligraphic style often incorporates elements of the Ming dynasty tradition, adapted to the sensibilities of nineteenth-century Japan. The poem itself speaks to the desire for withdrawal from the pressures of public life, favouring the quietude of the mountains and the simplicity of nature. This print captures the nuances of the original ink work, preserving the energy of the brushstrokes and the subtle tonal shifts of the ink. It is a piece that invites quiet contemplation, suitable for spaces where a sense of calm and intellectual focus is desired.

You might also like

Chinese Poem Lamenting the Death of a Friend - Ryōkan Taigu — Ryōkan Taigu
Swallow and Lotus - Fachang Muqi — Fachang Muqi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chinese-Poem-Extolling-a-Reclusive-Lifestyle_Poster_CompositorV1_1790814732058.jpg?v=1790817532
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/sv/products/chinese-poem-extolling-a-reclusive-lifestyle-jakugon-taijo-1
