birds-and-narcissus-xu-xiang
Birds and Narcissus - Xu Xiang

A traditional Chinese fan painting by Xu Xiang, depicting two birds and narcissus flowers in ink and light colour.

This fan painting by Xu Xiang demonstrates the traditional Chinese bird-and-flower genre. The composition is arranged within the fan format, a common medium for literati artists to display brushwork and poetic sensibility. The scene features two birds perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned beside a cluster of narcissus flowers. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle ink washes and light colour applications to define the forms.

The brushwork is fluid and precise, characteristic of the gongbi or xieyi styles often seen in such works. The birds are rendered with attention to their posture and plumage, while the narcissus plants are depicted with sweeping, calligraphic strokes that suggest movement and growth. The negative space remains an active component of the composition, allowing the subjects to breathe within the curved boundaries of the fan.

To the right, a column of calligraphy provides context and poetic accompaniment, a standard practice in classical Chinese painting. The red seals, or chops, indicate the artist's identity and ownership history. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising harmony between nature and the observer. The focus remains on the observation of seasonal flora and fauna, captured with economy of line and tone. The work is an example of the technical skill required to balance ink density and colour on absorbent paper, ensuring that the final image appears balanced and composed.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Two Egrets and Lotus - Sakai Hōitsu — Sakai Hōitsu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Birds-and-Narcissus_Poster_CompositorV1_1790797339388.jpg?v=1790804191
