beautiful-lady-hu-xigui
Beautiful Lady - Hu Xigui

A delicate ink and colour painting on silk by Hu Xigui, featuring a graceful female figure alongside a serene mountain landscape.

This work by Hu Xigui, a painter active during the late Qing Dynasty, presents a refined example of traditional Chinese figure painting. The composition is split between a circular fan painting at the top and a rectangular landscape scene below, both mounted on a larger silk scroll. The upper section depicts a solitary female figure, rendered with delicate brushwork, positioned beneath the sweeping branches of a willow tree. Her posture and expression reflect the aesthetic conventions of the period, which prioritised grace and a sense of quiet contemplation.

The lower section features a serene mountain view, incorporating soft washes of ink to suggest mist and distance. This combination of figure and landscape demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in balancing different subjects within a single mounting. Hu Xigui was known for his ability to capture subtle emotional states through minimal line work, a skill evident in the gentle curve of the lady's shoulders and the precise rendering of the willow leaves.

The use of silk as a substrate allows for a soft, diffused quality in the ink, creating a harmonious transition between the figures and their environment. The inclusion of calligraphy and red seals provides historical context, indicating the work's provenance and the artist's signature. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the early twentieth century in China, where traditional techniques remained the primary mode of expression despite the changing social climate. The muted palette and balanced composition make this an example of the refined taste associated with the literati tradition, where the focus remains on the interplay of line, space, and subject matter.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Samarkande (Plate 6, Compositions in the Oriental Style) - Émile-Allain Séguy — Émile-Allain Séguy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Beautiful-Lady_Poster_CompositorV1_1790990317659.jpg?v=1790991566
