This work, titled 498 The Beard Is the Grass of the Bald-Headed Man, displays his characteristic approach to colour and structure. The central figure dominates the composition, with a head rendered through concentric, wood-grain-like lines that suggest both human anatomy and the growth rings of a tree. This fusion of the biological and the arboreal is a recurring theme in his work, reflecting his philosophy regarding the unity of man and nature.

The background is divided into distinct zones of colour and pattern. A grid-like structure in the lower section provides a stark contrast to the fluid, rounded forms of the central head. Hundertwasser employs a high-chroma palette, utilising yellows, greens, and reds to create a sense of visual energy. The green wash that overlays the central figure acts as a bridge between the subject and the surrounding environment, reinforcing the title's metaphorical connection between the beard and grass. The application of paint is varied, with some areas showing thin, translucent layers and others appearing more opaque and textured.

Throughout his career, Hundertwasser sought to create art that functioned as a protest against the rationalism of modern architecture and industrial design. His work often incorporates elements of fantasy and personal symbolism, inviting the viewer to engage with a world where the rigid boundaries of reality are softened. This piece is a clear example of his ability to transform a simple, whimsical concept into a complex visual narrative. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, decorative arrangement that emphasises the surface of the canvas.

You might also like

Catax by Francis Picabia
Rain with Golden Balls by Sabin Bălașa
Friedensreich Hundertwasser prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/498-The-Beard-Is-the-Grass-of-the-Bald-Headed-Man_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119467277.jpg?v=1792196219
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/sv/products/498-the-beard-is-the-grass-of-the-bald-headed-man-friedensreich-hundertwasser
