Spindels relationer - Friedensreich Hundertwasser — Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Escher, med titeln "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", skapades 1961.

Trycket visar hans tidiga mästerskap inom litografiska tekniker.

Escher displays the artist's initial exploration of form and line. Created in 1920, the work predates his more famous mathematical tessellations and impossible structures. Instead, it focuses on the expressive potential of the woodcut medium. The portrait is constructed from a series of flowing, rhythmic lines that define the facial features and hair of the subject.

Escher uses the contrast between black and white to create volume. The lines follow the contours of the face, creating a sense of movement that suggests a psychological depth rather than a static likeness. Escher featuring three complex, knotted forms rendered with precise geometric shading and a warm, earthy colour palette.

M.C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, produced this lithograph in 1965. The work features three distinct, knotted forms rendered with precision. The two upper figures display smooth, ribbon-like surfaces that twist into continuous loops, while the larger, central form is composed of a serrated, gear-like structure. This central element creates a sense of mechanical complexity, as the teeth of the form appear to interlock and weave through one another in a non-Euclidean fashion.

Escher utilised a limited, warm colour palette of ochre, brown, and black to define the volume and depth of these objects. The shading on the surfaces provides a tactile quality, suggesting a three-dimensional presence on the flat paper. By employing parallel lines to follow the contours of the shapes, Escher directs the eye along the path of each knot, encouraging the viewer to trace the impossible geometry of the composition. The work demonstrates his interest in mathematical concepts, specifically topology and the representation of spatial paradoxes.

Unlike his more narrative works, this piece focuses on the pure structural properties of the forms. The arrangement of the three knots against a plain background allows the viewer to concentrate on the interplay of light and shadow. Escher in 1930, is a lithograph that demonstrates the artist's early interest in reflection and architectural precision. The composition depicts a Gothic cathedral partially submerged in water, with its twin spires rising against a dark, starry sky. A small sailboat glides in the foreground, its presence providing a sense of scale against the monumental structure.

Escher employs a high-contrast black and white palette to define the forms. The water surface acts as a mirror, distorting the architecture through rhythmic, horizontal ripples. These lines break the reflection of the cathedral into segments, creating a visual tension between the solid stone of the building and the fluid nature of the water. The artist uses clean, sharp lines to delineate the Gothic arches and the verticality of the spires, contrasting these with the soft, undulating patterns of the waves.

This work predates the more famous mathematical tessellations and impossible constructions for which Escher is known. This work demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with tessellation, a process where shapes interlock to cover a plane without gaps or overlaps. Escher explores the transition between two distinct biological forms, the aquatic fish and the amphibious frog, through a systematic geometric arrangement.

The composition is divided into two primary zones. The upper section features dark, silhouetted fish swimming against a horizontally lined background. As the eye moves downward, these forms undergo a metamorphosis. The negative space around the fish begins to take the shape of frogs, which eventually emerge as the dominant, light-coloured figures in the lower portion of the print. Escher uses the contrast between black and white ink to define these boundaries, ensuring that each figure remains distinct while simultaneously functioning as a component of the other's outline.

Escher was not a mathematician by training, yet his work frequently engages with mathematical principles. In this piece, he employs a regular division of the plane to create a sense of order. The repetition of the figures creates a rhythmic quality, drawing the viewer into a cycle of transformation. The artist's signature, MCE, is visible in the lower left corner, integrated into the design. Escher in 1922, is a bookplate (ex libris) designed for B.G. Escher. It demonstrates the early development of the artist's interest in graphic contrast and formal structure. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the upper section features the text 'EX LIBRIS' rendered in bold, blocky lettering, while the lower portion displays the name 'B.G. ESCHER'. Between these textual elements, Escher employs a geometric motif that suggests a stylised landscape or architectural form, utilising the stark opposition of black and white ink characteristic of the woodcut medium.

Escher produced this work during his formative years, a period when he was heavily influenced by the graphic traditions of the Netherlands and his travels in Italy. The design relies on a high-contrast aesthetic, where the negative space is as active as the positive forms. The lettering is integrated into the overall geometry of the piece, showing an early inclination towards the fusion of typography and image. Escher depicting the village of Turello, showcasing his early mastery of perspective and architectural detail.

Executed in 1932, this lithograph captures the rugged topography of the Italian countryside, a subject that occupied M.C. Escher during his extended residence in Italy. The composition employs a high vantage point, looking down upon the small village of Turello. Escher uses a precise, methodical approach to mark-making, employing fine lines to define the textures of stone walls, tiled roofs, and the surrounding mountainous terrain.

The foreground is framed by a rustic pergola and stone masonry, which act as a visual anchor for the viewer. This framing device creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye towards the village centre and the distant, undulating hills. Escher demonstrates his early interest in spatial relationships and the geometry of architectural forms, elements that would later become central to his more abstract, mathematical works.

Unlike his later impossible constructions, this piece remains grounded in direct observation. The artist records the specificities of the Mediterranean environment, from the dense clusters of vegetation to the play of light across the village architecture. The monochromatic palette emphasises the structural clarity of the scene, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between natural forms and human-built structures. This work provides insight into Escher's formative years, documenting his technical proficiency in lithography and his keen eye for the quiet, structural beauty of rural Italian life. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, produced Three Intersecting Planes in 1954. This lithograph demonstrates his preoccupation with geometric structures and the manipulation of spatial perception. The composition is contained within a large equilateral triangle, which acts as a frame for the internal arrangement of intersecting forms. Escher uses a restricted palette of black, white, and ochre to define the surfaces of the planes, creating a sense of volume and depth through the use of hatching and shading.

The image presents a complex arrangement of rhombic and triangular shapes that appear to fold and intersect in three-dimensional space. By employing a systematic approach to perspective, Escher creates a visual paradox where the viewer struggles to identify a single, stable orientation. The repetition of these geometric units creates a rhythmic pattern that draws the eye across the surface, encouraging a close examination of how each plane connects to the next. The use of line work is precise, reflecting the artist's background in graphic arts and his technical mastery of the lithographic process.

Unlike his more famous architectural illusions, this work focuses on the pure interplay of form and light. The ochre tones provide a contrast to the stark black and white sections, adding a layer of warmth to the otherwise clinical geometric construction. Escher often explored the mathematical properties of space, and this piece is a clear example of his ability to translate abstract concepts into visual art. Escher, produced in 1946. The work demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with mathematical concepts, specifically the manipulation of perspective and the infinite. Escher constructs a symmetrical corridor that draws the viewer's eye toward a central vanishing point, yet the architectural elements fold back upon themselves in a recursive loop. The composition features a series of arches and columns that frame views of a celestial, cosmic void, populated by floating, bird-like forms and planetary bodies.

The technical execution relies on precise tonal gradations to create a sense of three-dimensional volume within a two-dimensional plane. Escher uses the medium of lithography to achieve smooth transitions between light and shadow, which assists in the illusion of depth. The repetition of the architectural bays creates a rhythmic structure, while the inclusion of the strange, avian figures introduces an element of the uncanny. By distorting the expected geometry of a gallery space, Escher forces the observer to question the reliability of spatial perception. The work does not adhere to traditional Euclidean geometry, instead opting for a self-referential loop where the beginning and end of the corridor appear to merge. Escher, contrasting a perfectly rendered geometric star with a collection of irregular, organic debris.

Order and Chaos II, created by M.C. Escher in 1955, presents a visual dialogue between mathematical precision and organic disorder. The composition is circular, containing a central stellated dodecahedron that radiates geometric clarity. This central form is constructed with sharp, clean lines and defined shading, representing the concept of order. The geometric object is enclosed within a sphere, which is filled with a collection of discarded, irregular objects, including shells, stones, and broken fragments. These items represent chaos, their forms lacking the symmetry of the central star.

Escher uses the contrast between the rigid, calculated geometry of the star and the random, weathered textures of the debris to explore the tension between human-made structure and natural entropy. The lithograph demonstrates his technical skill in rendering light and shadow, which gives the central object a three-dimensional presence against the flatter, more chaotic background. The work is a study in spatial relationships, where the viewer is invited to observe how two opposing states of existence occupy the same physical space.

This piece is characteristic of Escher's later work, where his interest in polyhedra and mathematical tiling became more pronounced. Escher during his residence in Italy. Executed in 1931, the drawing demonstrates his early focus on the structural geometry of Mediterranean architecture. The composition utilises a high vantage point, looking down upon the tightly packed white buildings and the distinctive bell tower of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

Escher employs a precise, controlled application of coloured pencil to define the forms. The steep cliffs on the right side of the frame provide a vertical contrast to the horizontal expanse of the sea, which is rendered with subtle, rhythmic strokes. Unlike his later, more famous mathematical tessellations and impossible constructions, this piece reflects his observational period. Escher uses the curvature of the sphere to distort the fish shapes, forcing them to conform to the spherical geometry while maintaining their recognisable form. The contrast between the dark, solid fish shapes and the lighter, grid-like background provides a clear visual structure. The use of a warm, terracotta-toned background adds a distinct colour element to what is otherwise a study in monochrome pattern and form.

Escher's approach to this subject reflects his interest in non-Euclidean geometry. By mapping a repeating pattern onto a sphere, he avoids the edges found in flat plane tilings. The fish appear to swim around the globe, their forms interlocking in a continuous, seamless loop. This work is a clear example of his ability to merge artistic vision with mathematical principles. The precision of the lines and the calculated reduction in scale towards the centre of the spiral demonstrate his technical control over the lithographic process. The work remains a primary example of how Escher used simple, repeating motifs to explore complex spatial relationships, inviting the viewer to consider the nature of infinity and the limitations of two-dimensional representation.

You might also like

Order and Chaos II by M.C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, produced this work as part of his systematic exploration of tessellation. The print displays a series of mathematical studies, categorised by letters and numbers, which demonstrate how geometric shapes and organic forms can fill a two-dimensional surface without gaps or overlaps.

In the upper section, Escher presents abstract geometric patterns labelled A, B, and C. These serve as the foundational logic for the more representational designs below. The lower panels introduce figurative elements, including beetles, dragonflies, and birds. Each creature is stylised to fit perfectly into the surrounding negative space, creating a reciprocal relationship where the background is as significant as the subject.

Escher was fascinated by the mathematical principles of symmetry and periodic tiling. His interest was sparked by visits to the Alhambra in Granada, where he studied Moorish tile work. Unlike the decorative nature of those historical patterns, Escher used the technique to investigate the boundaries between figure and ground. He often employed high-contrast black and white ink to clarify the interlocking shapes, ensuring the viewer can track the transformation of each motif across the plane.

This specific lithograph acts as a visual catalogue of his methodology. Escher featuring organic, worm-like creatures navigating a complex, geometric landscape of repeating pyramids.

Flat Worms, created by M.C. Escher in 1959, is a lithograph that explores the intersection of biological forms and geometric space. The composition features several flat, worm-like creatures navigating a complex, three-dimensional environment constructed from repeating triangular and pyramidal structures. Escher uses his signature approach to spatial manipulation, creating a sense of depth that feels both logical and impossible. The creatures appear to move through the crystalline architecture, their bodies casting shadows that suggest a coherent light source, yet the environment itself defies standard Euclidean perspective.

This work demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with tessellation and the division of the plane. While the background consists of a rigid, grid-like pattern of geometric solids, the organic shapes of the worms provide a contrast in form. Escher employs a monochromatic palette, using varying degrees of shading to define the volume of the pyramids and the smooth, dark surfaces of the worms. The horizontal bands of light that cross the image suggest a layered or sliced view of space, a technique that adds to the visual tension of the piece.

Escher often utilised his background in graphic arts to produce works that functioned as visual puzzles. In this instance, the viewer is invited to trace the path of the creatures as they weave through the structured voids. The precision of the linework and the calculated placement of each element reflect the artist's rigorous attention to detail. By combining the organic with the mathematical, Escher creates a scene that remains visually engaging without relying on traditional narrative tropes. Escher, featuring a continuous geometric transformation from text to nature and architecture.

Metamorphosis III is a monumental woodcut by M.C. Escher, measuring nearly seven metres in length. It represents the culmination of his exploration into mathematical tiling and the transformation of forms. The composition functions as a continuous narrative, where one shape gradually morphs into another through a series of geometric shifts.

The work begins with the word 'METAMORPHOSE', which dissolves into a grid of black and white squares. These squares evolve into complex tessellations featuring insects, bees, and birds. As the eye travels across the print, the figures transition into aquatic life, then into horses, and eventually into architectural forms. The sequence concludes by returning to the original grid pattern, creating a cyclical visual experience.

Escher utilised a restricted palette of black, white, and muted green to maintain clarity throughout the complex transitions. Each stage of the transformation relies on precise geometric logic, where the negative space of one figure becomes the positive form of the next. The inclusion of an Italian townscape in the later sections provides a rare moment of representational stability within the otherwise abstract progression. This print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the woodcut medium, requiring immense technical control to execute the fine lines and consistent registration across such a large surface. Escher depicting the rock-carved dwellings near Sperlinga, Sicily, through a study of light, shadow, and geological texture.

During his extended residence in Italy, M.C. Escher frequently travelled through the rural regions of the south, documenting the unique vernacular architecture he encountered. This lithograph, produced in 1933, captures the troglodytic dwellings near the town of Sperlinga in Sicily. Escher was drawn to these structures, where human habitation was carved directly into the soft sandstone rock face.

The composition relies on a stark contrast between the deep, cavernous shadows and the bright, sun-drenched openings of the dwellings. Escher employs a dense, stippled technique to render the texture of the stone, creating a sense of weight and geological permanence. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to look into the dark recesses of the caves while observing the weathered exterior surfaces. Unlike his later, more mathematical works, this piece reflects his early interest in the physical reality of the Mediterranean environment.

The print demonstrates his technical control over the lithographic medium, particularly in his ability to manage tonal transitions within a monochromatic palette. The irregular shapes of the cave entrances create a rhythmic pattern across the rock face, suggesting a natural integration between the built environment and the geological formation. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Escher transforms a utilitarian site into a study of form and texture. This work remains a clear example of his observational period, prior to his shift toward the impossible geometries and tessellations that defined his later career. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist known for his exploration of mathematical concepts, created Moebius Strip II in 1963. This woodcut depicts a group of ants traversing the surface of a Moebius strip, a non-orientable surface with only one side and one boundary component. The composition demonstrates Escher's fascination with topology and the paradoxes of spatial perception.

The ants appear to walk along both the inner and outer surfaces of the strip simultaneously, illustrating the mathematical property where a continuous path leads back to the starting point without ever crossing an edge. The limited colour palette focuses attention on the geometric form rather than atmospheric effects.

Escher often utilised such motifs to question the nature of reality and the limitations of two-dimensional representation. The work is a clear example of his technical mastery in woodcut printing, where he achieved high levels of detail through careful carving and layering of ink. This piece remains a primary example of how mathematical principles can be translated into visual art, providing a clear demonstration of the Moebius strip's unique properties through a narrative of movement and repetition.

You might also like

Stars - M.C. Escher, featuring a symmetrical Dutch landscape that transforms into birds through the use of tessellation.

Day and Night is a woodcut print by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, completed in 1938. This work demonstrates his interest in tessellation and the transformation of forms. The composition depicts a Dutch polder landscape, divided into two distinct halves that mirror one another. On the left, the scene is bathed in daylight, while the right side is shrouded in darkness.

At the centre of the image, the fields transform into the silhouettes of birds. These shapes undergo a metamorphosis as they move across the horizon. The black birds flying towards the right gradually shift into white birds flying towards the left. This transition relies on the principle of figure-ground reversal, where the negative space of one set of birds becomes the positive form of the other.

Escher utilised two separate woodblocks to achieve the stark contrast between the black and white ink. The geometric precision of the fields, which resemble a chessboard, provides a structured base for the fluid movement of the birds above. The architecture at the bottom of the print, featuring traditional Dutch houses and windmills, remains consistent on both sides, further emphasising the symmetry of the composition.

This print is a primary example of Escher's mathematical approach to art. He avoids traditional perspective in favour of a logical, repeating structure that challenges the viewer's perception of space and time. The work remains a clear representation of his ability to merge rigorous geometry with imaginative visual narratives. By stripping away colour, Escher focuses entirely on the interplay of light, shadow, and form, creating a balanced visual experience that remains consistent with his broader body of graphic work.

You might also like

Fish and Frogs - M.C. Escher, produced in 1921, demonstrates the early development of his technical precision in printmaking. The work presents a human cranium in profile, rendered with a stark, high-contrast aesthetic typical of the woodcut medium. Escher employs a series of fine, directional lines to define the anatomical contours of the bone, creating a sense of volume and texture despite the limited palette.

The composition is framed by a geometric border, which provides a rigid structure to the organic, irregular shape of the skull. Escher represents an early stage in the career of the Dutch graphic artist. Before he became known for his mathematical explorations of tessellation and impossible geometry, Escher produced works that leaned into symbolic and narrative themes. This piece depicts the biblical Garden of Eden, featuring Adam and Eve at the centre, joined by a diverse array of animals including a camel, a tiger, a lion, and an owl perched above them.

The composition is defined by a strong sense of symmetry and a decorative approach to natural forms. Escher uses the woodcut medium to create high-contrast imagery, where the black ink against the white paper emphasises the silhouettes of the figures and the stylised foliage. The trees and plants are rendered with repetitive, rhythmic patterns, a technique that hints at the artist's later interest in the systematic division of the plane.

Unlike his later, more cerebral works, this print displays a clear influence from the Art Nouveau movement and the decorative arts. Escher in 1921, demonstrates the early development of his graphic technique. Before he became known for his mathematical tessellations and impossible structures, Escher focused on the stark contrast of black and white surfaces. This work captures a sunflower in a state of decay, a subject that allowed the artist to experiment with the expressive potential of woodblock carving.

The composition relies on the interplay between solid black voids and sharp, white lines. Escher carves the petals and leaves with a focus on their organic, twisting forms. The central disc of the flower is rendered with a series of small, precise marks, creating a texture that contrasts with the sweeping curves of the surrounding foliage. By stripping away colour and mid-tones, the artist forces the viewer to focus on the structural rhythm of the plant.

This piece belongs to a period when Escher was heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, visible in the elongated, sinuous lines of the sunflower stems and leaves. The work is not merely a botanical study; it is an exercise in graphic economy. Escher uses the woodcut medium to define space through silhouette rather than perspective. The result is a bold, high-contrast image that remains a clear example of his early mastery of printmaking. The starkness of the black background pushes the white form of the flower forward, creating a graphic tension that defines the entire composition. It is a study of form and line, stripped of unnecessary detail, showing the artist's early interest in the geometry of nature.

You might also like

Bladbegonia by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita
April (Floral Woodcut) by Julie de Graag
M. Escher, created in 1917, functions as an ex-libris or bookplate for Bastiaan Kist. The composition features a central skeleton seated atop a dark, geometric block, which serves as a coffin or plinth. The figure is framed by an arched border, with the name of the owner integrated into the background space through bold, negative-space lettering.

Escher, who was nineteen at the time of this work, demonstrates an early interest in high-contrast imagery and the macabre. The woodcut medium dictates the stark separation between the black ink and the white paper, creating a graphic quality that defines the silhouette of the skeleton. The figure is rendered with a degree of anatomical stylisation, typical of the artist's formative years before he moved toward the mathematical tessellations and impossible structures of his later career.

The memento mori theme, represented by the skeleton, was a common motif in early twentieth-century printmaking. Escher uses the limited space of the bookplate to balance the morbid subject matter with the functional requirement of identifying the book's owner. The lettering curves around the central figure, ensuring the name remains legible despite the dense visual weight of the skeleton. This piece provides a glimpse into the early technical development of an artist who would eventually become known for his mastery of perspective and spatial illusion. The print is a clear example of his early experimentation with woodblock carving, showing a firm grasp of composition and the effective use of stark, monochromatic tones to convey a specific mood.

You might also like

Two Skeletons Splitting Apart a Tree by Stefano Della Bella
Dance of Death by Adriaen van de Venne
M.C. Escher, featuring bold contrasts and a direct, contemplative gaze.

This woodcut, created by M.C. Escher in 1920, captures the artist during his formative years. The composition relies on a stark contrast between black and white, a technique that defines his early graphic output. Escher depicts himself seated, his posture relaxed yet his gaze fixed directly upon the viewer. The surrounding space contains framed works, suggesting his environment as an artist and his early engagement with the act of observation.

The print demonstrates the influence of the woodcut tradition, which Escher explored extensively before his later focus on mathematical tessellations and impossible geometry. The lines are bold and deliberate, carving out the form of the chair and the figure through simplified shapes. The cross-hatched patterns on the chair seat provide a textural counterpoint to the solid black areas of his clothing. This work offers a glimpse into the artist's early technical development, showing his ability to manipulate light and shadow to create a sense of volume on a flat surface.

Unlike his later, more complex works, this portrait is grounded in a realistic representation of the human form. It remains a clear example of his early mastery of the woodcut medium, where every mark is a result of physical removal of material from the block. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre, framed by the rectangular shapes of the art on the wall behind him. This piece is a record of the artist at the beginning of his career, before he moved toward the conceptual explorations that would define his later reputation. It is a study in self-reflection, rendered with the precision and graphic clarity that would become the hallmark of his career.

You might also like

Portrait of a Man (M.C. Escher depicting the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome, defined by high-contrast lighting and precise architectural lines.

This wood engraving by M.C. Escher captures the imposing silhouette of the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome. Executed in 1934, the work demonstrates the artist's early focus on Italian architecture and his mastery of the woodcut medium. Escher lived in Italy for over a decade, and his observations of Roman structures provided the basis for many of his graphic works during this period.

The composition relies on a stark contrast between light and shadow. The dark, ink-heavy sky presses against the illuminated stone surfaces of the fortress, creating a sense of weight and volume. Escher employs precise, controlled lines to define the masonry, the arched bridge, and the circular structure of the mausoleum. The cross-hatching technique used in the shadowed areas of the bridge and the lower walls adds texture to the stone, while the simplified forms of the building emphasise its geometric presence.

Unlike his later works, which often explore mathematical paradoxes or impossible geometries, this piece remains grounded in direct observation. It reflects a period where Escher was refining his technical ability to translate three-dimensional architectural forms into two-dimensional prints. The perspective is low, looking up at the structure, which increases the sense of scale. The absence of human figures contributes to the quiet, nocturnal atmosphere of the scene. This print is a clear example of the artist's ability to manipulate light and shadow to create a sense of drama within a static, architectural subject.

You might also like

Dedication Plate to Antonio Barberini by Giovanni Battista Falda
Pantheon by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi
M.
