The piece is executed in ink on a circular silk fan format, a common medium for courtly artistic expression during this period. The calligraphy displays the fluid, expressive brushwork characteristic of the era, where the rhythm of the ink application reflects the internal state of the writer as much as the literal meaning of the text.

The quatrain itself addresses the melancholy associated with the passing of spring, a recurring theme in classical Chinese poetry. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, maintaining a balance between the weight of the ink and the negative space of the silk ground. Several red seal impressions are visible, indicating the work's provenance and its status within the imperial collection. These seals provide a historical record of the piece as it passed through various hands, adding a layer of physical history to the aesthetic composition.

In terms of technique, the brushwork shows a controlled variation in pressure, creating a sense of movement within each character. The ink has aged to a soft, muted tone, harmonising with the darkened silk. This piece offers a glimpse into the intellectual life of the Song court, where the ability to compose and write poetry was a requirement for the ruling elite. The work is not merely a linguistic record but a visual performance of the brush, capturing a specific moment of reflection on the natural cycle of the seasons. It remains a significant object for those interested in the intersection of imperial history and the refined traditions of Chinese calligraphic art.

You might also like

Two scenes from the Plum in the Golden Vase (Jinpingmei) - Gu Jianlong — Gu Jianlong
Touka shoukinzu (Peach Blossoms and Birds) - Itō Jakuchū — Itō Jakuchū

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Quatrain-on-Late-Spring_Poster_CompositorV1_1790938278733.jpg?v=1790939339
quatrain-on-snow-covered-west-lake-emperor-lizong
Quatrain on snow-covered West Lake - Emperor Lizong

A refined example of Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy by Emperor Lizong, featuring a poetic reflection on the snow-covered West Lake in Hangzhou.

This work presents a quatrain composed and written by Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty. Executed in ink on a circular silk fan format, the calligraphy reflects the refined aesthetic standards of the imperial court during the thirteenth century. The characters demonstrate a controlled, balanced hand, typical of the scholarly tradition where rulers were expected to possess high proficiency in the literary arts.

The poem describes the atmospheric conditions of West Lake in Hangzhou, a location of immense cultural importance to the Southern Song elite. The text captures the visual experience of snow clearing over the water, the stillness of the scene, and the presence of distant peaks. The circular composition, known as a fan painting or album leaf, was a popular medium for poetry and painting in the Song period. It allowed for intimate viewing experiences, often shared among scholars and officials.

Several red seals are visible on the silk, indicating the provenance and the history of the object within imperial collections. These marks provide evidence of the work's movement through various hands over the centuries. The ink remains clear against the aged, darkened silk, maintaining the legibility of the original brushwork. This piece offers a direct connection to the intellectual life of the Southern Song court, where the synthesis of poetry and calligraphy was a primary mode of expression. The work is a fine example of the period's focus on restraint, clarity, and the observation of nature through a literary lens. It serves as a record of the Emperor's personal engagement with the landscape of his capital city.

You might also like

Excerpt from Song of Leyou Park - Zhang Jizhi — Zhang Jizhi
Mountain Retreat - Wang Yin — Wang Yin

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Quatrain-on-snow-covered-West-Lake_Poster_CompositorV1_1790986830805.jpg?v=1790987601
