Koryūsai was a prolific artist of the Ukiyo-e school, known for his refined depictions of women and his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format, though this work follows a standard oban size. The composition captures a quiet winter scene, where a woman walks along an engawa, or wooden veranda, while a child and another figure observe her from behind a shoji screen.

The artist employs a muted colour palette to convey the chill of the season. Snow rests upon the bamboo leaves in the foreground, providing a stark contrast to the warm, earth-toned garments worn by the figures. The architectural elements, such as the geometric pattern on the sliding doors, provide a structured backdrop that balances the fluid lines of the woman's kimono. Koryūsai uses calligraphic line work to define the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the subjects, a hallmark of his mature style.

In the upper left corner, a poem is inscribed within a cloud-shaped cartouche, a common feature in Ukiyo-e prints that integrates literature with visual art. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the daily lives of urban residents were elevated through artistic representation. The scene avoids dramatic action, focusing instead on a moment of domestic stillness. The technical execution of the woodblock carving allows for the subtle layering of colours, typical of the nishiki-e (brocade print) technique that flourished during this era. This work provides a window into the cultural practices and fashion of eighteenth-century Japan, presented with the characteristic grace associated with Koryūsai's oeuvre.

You might also like

Night Rain of Genjo by Suzuki Harunobu
Three Women Strolling in the Countryside by Chōbunsai Eishi
Isoda Koryūsai prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Winter-from-the-series-Elegant-Play-in-the-Four-Seasons_Poster_CompositorV1_1791939986381.jpg?v=1791948527
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/products/winter-from-the-series-elegant-play-in-the-four-seasons-isoda-koryusai
