To the left, a palanquin is carried uphill by two porters, while a traveller follows behind. To the right, individuals wearing straw raincoats and wide hats descend the path. The figures lean into the wind, their postures indicating the physical effort required to navigate the storm.\n\nIn the background, Hiroshige uses layers of grey and dark green to suggest a dense bamboo grove. The trees bend under the pressure of the wind, their forms rendered with soft edges to imply distance and the obscuring effect of the downpour. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by greys and browns. A single strip of blue along the path provides a point of contrast. The use of bokashi, a technique of hand-applying ink to the woodblock to create a gradient, is evident in the darkening sky at the top of the frame. This print demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to translate atmospheric conditions into a graphic medium.
