Jorn was a founding member of the CoBrA movement, an international group of artists who prioritised spontaneity, folk art influences, and a rejection of rigid formalist structures. In this piece, the artist employs a dense web of etched lines to suggest a figure, though the form remains intentionally ambiguous and fluid. The composition relies on the tension between the dark, aggressive marks and the softer, tonal washes of the aquatint background.

The print demonstrates Jorn's interest in the physical act of creation. The lines appear scratched into the plate with urgency, creating a sense of motion that defies static representation. By layering these marks, Jorn builds a visual field where the subject emerges from and recedes into the surrounding texture. The palette is restrained, focusing on earthy browns and deep blacks, which allows the focus to remain on the interplay of line and shadow.

Jorn's approach to printmaking often mirrored his painting practice, where he sought to bypass conscious control in favour of a more primal, intuitive expression. This work reflects his ongoing investigation into the human condition through abstraction, avoiding clear narratives in favour of emotional resonance. The print is signed and dated in the lower margin, consistent with his output from the late 1950s. It provides a clear example of his graphic style, where the medium of etching is pushed to accommodate a free, almost chaotic application of mark-making. The result is a work that feels immediate and unrefined, maintaining the vitality of the original copper plate process.

You might also like

Etching No. 5 by Hans Hartung
Het oor by Sipke Huismans

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Abstract-Figure-Etching-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116524724.jpg?v=1792138186
