The composition depicts the god Thor in a small boat, poised to strike the Midgard Serpent with his hammer, Mjolnir. Beside him sits the giant Hymir, who appears fearful and passive, contrasting with the muscular, active posture of the deity. Fuseli employs a dark, moody palette to convey the turbulent atmosphere of the sea, using strong chiaroscuro to define the figures against the gloom.

Fuseli was known for his interest in the sublime and the supernatural, themes that align with the broader Romantic movement. His approach to the human form is highly stylised, often favouring exaggerated musculature and theatrical poses. This work demonstrates his ability to translate literary and mythological narratives into visual drama. The serpent, emerging from the dark waters, creates a sense of tension and impending conflict. The lighting focuses the viewer's attention on the central struggle, while the background remains obscured in shadow, adding to the sense of mystery and danger inherent in the myth.

This painting is a characteristic example of Fuseli's work, which often explored themes of power, terror, and the heroic. His training in Italy and his subsequent career in England allowed him to blend classical influences with a more personal, imaginative style. The work remains a compelling study of how 18th-century artists engaged with non-classical mythologies, moving away from traditional religious or historical subjects toward more visceral, emotive storytelling. The print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the dramatic contrast between the illuminated figures and the surrounding darkness.

You might also like

The Abduction of Ganymede by Rembrandt van Rijn
Study for 'Perseus and Andromeda: The Doom Fulfilled' by Edward Burne-Jones

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Thor-Battering-the-Midgard-Serpent_Poster_CompositorV1_1792108783004.jpg?v=1792135598
