In this work, he captures a quiet, observational moment within a Russian household at the turn of the twentieth century. The scene centres on a family gathered around a gramophone, a technological novelty of the era that brought recorded music into the private sphere.

The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the device, which acts as the catalyst for the figures' shared attention. A woman in a lilac dress sits near the window, operating the machine, while children and older family members stand or sit in anticipation. Makovsky employs a muted, earthy palette, typical of his later period, which allows the soft light filtering from the window to define the forms of the figures and the textures of their clothing. The walls are adorned with framed pictures, suggesting a comfortable, middle-class interior that reflects the artist's interest in the everyday realities of Russian society.

Unlike the more overtly political or social critiques found in earlier Peredvizhniki works, this painting focuses on the intersection of modern technology and traditional family life. The artist uses precise brushwork to render the details of the gramophone horn and the varied expressions of the listeners. The atmosphere is one of stillness and curiosity, documenting a specific cultural shift where the mechanical reproduction of sound began to alter the social fabric of the home. Makovsky avoids sentimentality, preferring a direct, honest depiction of his subjects. The work provides a glimpse into the domestic habits of the period, documenting the arrival of modernity in a conventional setting.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/They-Listen-to-the-Gramophone_Poster_CompositorV1_1786289047519.jpg?v=1786665455
