The composition focuses on the gnarled, arching branches that extend across the frame, creating a sense of quiet movement against a muted background. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the subtle variations in ink tone to define the texture of the bark and the delicate form of the blossoms.

The plum blossom is a frequent motif in East Asian art, often associated with resilience and the arrival of spring during the coldest months. Here, the snow serves to emphasise the strength of the branches, which appear to push through the winter chill. The brushwork is precise, capturing the weight of the snow on the wood while maintaining the lightness of the petals. The negative space surrounding the tree provides a sense of atmosphere, suggesting a cold, still environment.

Xu Jing demonstrates a mastery of ink wash techniques, balancing the density of the tree structure with the openness of the silk surface. The application of ink is controlled, with fine lines used to delineate the twigs and softer washes to suggest the accumulation of snow. This approach creates a visual rhythm that guides the eye along the curves of the branches. The work reflects a long-standing appreciation for the natural world, where the observation of seasonal change informs the artistic process. By focusing on a single subject, the artist invites a contemplative engagement with the details of the form, from the rough texture of the trunk to the fragile appearance of the flowers. This print captures the tonal depth and material quality of the original silk, providing a clear view of the artist's technical approach to ink and wash.

You might also like

The Four Accomplishments - Kano Shōei — Kanō Shōei
Snowscape, leaf from Album for Zhou Lianggong - Ye Xin — Ye Xin

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Pure-Whiteness-of-Winter_Poster_CompositorV1_1790987778298.jpg?v=1790988073
