This etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicts 'The Entombment of Christ', part of a series on the Stations of the Cross. The dramatic composition and fine detail capture the emotional intensity of the scene.
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) was a Venetian painter and printmaker, the eldest son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and elder brother of Lorenzo Tiepolo. He worked alongside his father and brother, assisting in large-scale fresco projects for churches and aristocratic patrons. Domenico developed his own independent style, characterised by genre scenes and religious subjects. He produced a large number of etchings, often after his own designs or those of his father. 'The Entombment of Christ' depicts the scene following the crucifixion, where Christ's body is being placed in the tomb. Several figures surround the body, including mourners and attendants. The composition is dramatic, with strong contrasts of light and shadow that heighten the emotional intensity of the scene. The etching technique allows for fine detail and texture, particularly in the rendering of the figures' drapery and facial expressions. The print is part of a series depicting the Stations of the Cross, recounting the events of Christ's Passion.
