The composition is structured across a six-panel folding screen, a format designed to divide interior spaces while providing a surface for large-scale narrative painting. The use of gold leaf clouds, known as 'kin-un', serves to unify the disparate elements of the scene, creating a sense of atmospheric depth against the flat, decorative background.

The subject matter features the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, a group of deities popular in Japanese folklore, depicted here in a lighthearted interaction with a group of children. The figures are rendered with the characteristic brushwork of the Kano school, balancing precise outlines with fluid, expressive gestures. The inclusion of a flower-laden cart and the surrounding pine tree suggests themes of longevity and prosperity, common motifs in Japanese art of this era. The children are depicted in various states of play, their movements providing a sense of energy that contrasts with the more static, seated figures of the deities.

Kano Chikanobu, a member of the influential Kano lineage, maintained the technical standards established by his predecessors while adapting to the tastes of the burgeoning merchant class. The application of mineral pigments over the gold-leafed paper creates a subtle interplay of light and texture. This piece functions as both a decorative object and a cultural narrative, reflecting the values of the period through its harmonious arrangement of figures and natural elements. The screen demonstrates the technical proficiency required to manage large-scale compositions, ensuring that the visual weight remains balanced across the six panels.

You might also like

Chinese Women in a Palace Garden - Kano Eitoku — Kanō Eitoku
Prunus - Kano Einō — Kanō Einō

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Seven-Gods-of-Good-Fortune-and-Chinese-Children_Poster_CompositorV1_1791256176231.jpg?v=1791258402
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/products/seven-gods-of-good-fortune-and-chinese-children-kano-chikanobu
