The artist depicts himself wearing a heavy fur cap and a thick green coat, suggesting the cold conditions of his studio during that winter. A white bandage covers the right side of his head, drawing immediate attention to the physical trauma he had recently experienced. He holds a pipe in his mouth, a detail that adds a sense of composure to the composition.

The background consists of two distinct horizontal bands of colour, a warm orange-red that contrasts with the cooler tones of his clothing. Van Gogh employs his characteristic brushwork, using short, rhythmic strokes that follow the contours of his face and the folds of his coat. This technique creates a sense of movement across the surface of the canvas. The application of paint is deliberate, with the texture of the brushstrokes remaining visible to the viewer.

Van Gogh produced several self-portraits throughout his career, often using them as a means of self-analysis or when he lacked other models. This specific image is notable for its directness and the stark reality of its subject matter. The palette is balanced, relying on the opposition of complementary colours to create visual tension. The work provides a clear view into the artist's state of mind during a difficult period in his life in Provence. It remains a significant example of his ability to translate personal experience into a formalised visual language, using colour and line to convey a specific atmosphere.

You might also like

Self-Portrait by Edouard Vuillard
Self-Portrait by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Vincent van Gogh artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait-with-Bandaged-Ear_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123710733.jpg?v=1792297325
