Duval de Mercourt

A detailed engraving of William II, King of the Netherlands, capturing the monarch in his formal military uniform with precise line work.

This engraving depicts William II, King of the Netherlands, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of early nineteenth-century portraiture. The artist, M. J. V. Duval de Mercourt, employs a refined stipple and line technique to capture the likeness of the monarch. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the facial features and the elaborate military uniform.

The uniform itself is a study in texture and detail. The artist meticulously delineates the braided cordage, the heavy epaulettes, and the metallic sheen of the decorations. The contrast between the soft rendering of the facial features and the rigid, structured nature of the military attire provides a balanced composition. The use of light and shadow across the fabric suggests the weight and quality of the materials, while the steady gaze of the King conveys a sense of formal authority.

Duval de Mercourt was active during a period when the dissemination of royal portraits through print media was a standard practice for establishing the image of a ruler. This work functions as a historical record of the Dutch monarchy, reflecting the aesthetic values of the era. The clean lines and controlled shading demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship required for such engravings. The print remains a clear example of the portraiture style favoured in European courts during the early nineteenth century, focusing on the representation of status through costume and posture.

You might also like

Louis XV, King of France by Johann Georg Wille
Portret van Peter III van Rusland by Johann Christoph Teucher

M.
