The piece features a poem written in Chinese characters, a common practice among the intellectual elite of the Kamakura period. The text reflects on the nature of sugar, demonstrating the intersection of philosophical inquiry and daily observation within the monastic tradition.

Kokan Shiren was a prominent figure in the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. His mastery of both Japanese and Chinese literary forms allowed him to contribute significantly to the Gozan literature movement. The calligraphy itself displays a fluid, confident hand. Each character is formed with a balance of pressure and speed, typical of the period's calligraphic standards. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, more translucent washes, providing a rhythmic quality to the composition.

The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, neutral tone that complements the dark ink. The work is mounted with a decorative textile border featuring floral motifs, which frames the central text and provides a sense of formal presentation. This mounting style is consistent with the preservation of important scrolls and documents in Japanese collections.

As a piece of calligraphic art, this work invites the viewer to appreciate the physical gesture of the brush. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, following traditional reading patterns. The spacing between the columns and the individual characters creates a sense of openness, allowing the viewer to focus on the structure of each stroke. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink, offering a clear view of the artist's technique. It is a study in discipline and expression, reflecting the meditative focus inherent in the practice of Zen calligraphy.

You might also like

Chinese Poem on the Autumn Moon by Hanshan - Baisaō — Baisaō
Writing Set and Poem Card Box - Ryūryūkyo Shinsai — Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Poem-in-Chinese-about-Sugar_Poster_CompositorV1_1790837542007.jpg?v=1790838905
