The text is rendered in fluid, expressive ink strokes that move vertically across the paper. The paper itself is prepared with gold leaf applications, depicting subtle motifs of bush clover, a plant frequently associated with the autumn season in classical Japanese literature and art.

Ogata Sōken, a member of the influential Ogata family of artists, demonstrates a mastery of the brush here. The balance between the dark, bold ink of the characters and the shimmering, metallic background creates a visual rhythm. The calligraphy follows the kana script style, where the characters are connected in a continuous flow, reflecting the aesthetic values of the Edo period. The surrounding textile mounting, featuring a repeating floral pattern in blue and gold, frames the central panel, providing a tactile contrast to the smooth surface of the paper.

This piece functions as a synthesis of literary and visual arts. The poem captures a specific seasonal mood, while the decorative paper elevates the written word into a formal object of contemplation. The gold leaf is applied with varying density, suggesting distant clouds or mist, which provides a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium. The work remains a representative specimen of the refined taste prevalent among the cultural elite of seventeenth-century Japan, where the appreciation of classical poetry was inseparable from the physical beauty of the manuscript.

You might also like

Poem by Onakatomi Yoshinobu with Underpainting of Hollyhocks - Shōkadō Shōjō — Shōkadō Shōjō
Poetry Slips - Katsukawa Shun'ei — Katsukawa Shun'ei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Poem-by-Fujiwara-no-Ietaka-on-Decorated-Paper-with-Bush-Clover_Poster_CompositorV1_1791260179686.jpg?v=1791260621
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/products/poem-by-fujiwara-no-ietaka-on-decorated-paper-with-bush-clover-ogata-soken
