plum-blossoms-wen-zhi
Plum Blossoms - Wen Zhi

A traditional Chinese fan painting featuring a delicate plum blossom branch, rendered in ink and colour on gold-flecked paper.

This fan painting by Wen Zhi displays the traditional Chinese motif of the plum blossom, a subject long associated with resilience and the arrival of spring. The composition is executed on gold-flecked paper, a material that provides a warm, reflective background for the ink-washed branches and delicate floral petals. The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the gnarled trunk, using varying ink densities to suggest texture and age.

The plum branch extends horizontally across the fan, balancing the weight of the blossoms against the empty space of the paper. To the right, a column of calligraphy provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual imagery, a standard practice in literati art where painting and text function as a unified expression of the artist's intent. The red seals, placed carefully near the inscription, confirm the authorship and add a small, concentrated point of colour to the composition.

In Chinese art, the plum blossom is one of the Four Gentlemen, representing nobility and perseverance because it blooms during the coldest months of the year. Wen Zhi captures this spirit through a restrained palette and precise brushwork. The fan format itself imposes a specific geometry on the work, requiring the artist to adapt the natural curve of the branch to the radiating folds of the paper. This piece is an example of the refined aesthetic found in traditional fan painting, where the functional object becomes a canvas for scholarly expression. The work remains a quiet study of form, light, and seasonal transition, presented with the technical control characteristic of the period.

You might also like

The Scholar Zhong Kui - Xu Beihong — Xu Beihong
On the Lotus Pond - Shitao — Shitao

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Plum-Blossoms_Poster_CompositorV1_1790935422920.jpg?v=1790935865
