The composition is organised around a central table, upon which sits a yellow bowl containing a pineapple, accompanied by a vase of anemones. The background is dominated by large, stylised philodendron leaves, which flatten the pictorial plane and create a sense of decorative unity across the canvas.

Matisse employs a palette defined by high-chroma contrasts. The deep red of the background provides a counterpoint to the yellow of the table and the bowl, while the green of the foliage and the vase introduces a cooling element. The brushwork is direct and unadorned, focusing on the essential forms of the objects rather than realistic modelling. The spatial arrangement is deliberately ambiguous, as the table appears tilted toward the viewer, a technique Matisse used to emphasise the two-dimensional surface of the painting.

This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between domestic objects and decorative patterns. By placing the organic shapes of the flowers and leaves against the geometric structure of the table and the fruit, Matisse constructs a balanced visual environment. The painting avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, graphic quality that aligns with his broader experiments in colour theory and composition. The presence of the pineapple, a recurring motif in his still-life works from this period, acts as a structural anchor within the scene. The overall effect is one of controlled energy, where the relationship between the objects is defined by their colour values and their placement within the frame, rather than by their physical volume or depth.

You might also like

Flowers - Louis Valtat — Louis Valtat
Flowers on a fireplace in Clayes - Edouard Vuillard — Edouard Vuillard

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Pineapple-and-Anemones_Poster_CompositorV1_1791922453976.jpg?v=1791922636
