The work belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, which documented the arrival of foreigners and new technologies in the port city of Yokohama following the opening of Japan to international trade. The composition features two Western men in top hats and frock coats, viewed from behind, as they observe a hot air balloon ascending into the sky. The balloon itself is marked with the word 'Constitution', reflecting the curiosity surrounding Western political and scientific concepts during this era of rapid modernisation.

The figures are rendered with the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines typical of mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. The artist employs a muted colour palette, dominated by the soft blue of the sky and the earthy tones of the ground, contrasted against the red and green garments of the observers. The decorative border, featuring repeating floral motifs, frames the scene in a manner consistent with traditional ukiyo-e conventions. This print serves as a visual record of the fascination with foreign innovations that defined the period. It documents the intersection of traditional Japanese artistic techniques with the influx of Western subjects, providing a glimpse into the changing social climate of the time. The inclusion of the balloon, a symbol of technological progress, alongside the observers, creates a narrative of observation and discovery. The print remains a valuable example of how Japanese artists interpreted the arrival of global influences, translating unfamiliar sights into the established visual language of the woodblock medium.

You might also like

Shimosuwa, from Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
New Year Street-Performers - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Picture-of-a-Balloon_Poster_CompositorV1_1791441876170.jpg?v=1791445329
