The composition relies on a rigid grid structure, populated by a series of circles that vary in size and tonal value. By manipulating these elements, Vasarely creates a sense of movement and depth on a two-dimensional surface. The viewer experiences a shifting perception as the eye attempts to reconcile the static grid with the implied curvature of the circular forms.

Vasarely utilised a systematic approach to colour and form, often referred to as his 'alphabet plastique'. In this piece, the interplay between the grey-toned circles and the chromatic background generates a rhythmic oscillation. The colours transition through a spectrum of warm and cool tones, which interact with the neutral circles to produce a flickering effect. This method of visual organisation reflects the artist's interest in the science of optics and the mechanics of human perception.

Unlike traditional painting, which often seeks to represent external reality, this work focuses on the internal experience of the observer. The geometric precision and the absence of gestural brushwork are characteristic of Vasarely's mature period. He aimed to create a universal visual language that could be understood without cultural or linguistic barriers. The work functions as a study in spatial ambiguity, where the flat surface appears to warp and fold under the influence of the carefully calibrated dot pattern. Through this rigorous application of geometric principles, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the physical properties of light and colour, rather than searching for narrative or symbolic meaning within the image.

You might also like

Genève Blanc by Edna Andrade
Stabilisierter Kern by Max Bill

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Orion-Gris_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120344143.jpg?v=1792199613
