lijst-van-rugspieren-in-duits-en-latijn-reijer-stolk
Lijst van rugspieren in Duits en Latijn - Reijer Stolk

A modernist woodcut by Reijer Stolk featuring a structured anatomical list of human muscles in German and Latin.

This woodcut by the Dutch artist Reijer Stolk presents a systematic anatomical list of muscles, categorised by their location on the human body. The text is rendered in a bold, geometric typeface characteristic of early twentieth-century modernist graphic design. Stolk, known for his engagement with both fine art and applied design, utilises the woodcut medium to create high-contrast, clean lines that prioritise legibility and structural clarity.

The composition is organised into four distinct sections, each demarcated by a solid horizontal bar. These sections group the muscles of the back, shoulder, upper arm, and forearm. Each entry provides the German common name alongside its corresponding Latin anatomical term. The work reflects a period interest in the intersection of scientific documentation and aesthetic form, where the arrangement of text itself becomes a visual exercise in order and balance.

Stolk's approach to this anatomical chart avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the rhythmic repetition of the letterforms and the stark contrast between the ink and the paper. The print serves as a functional document, yet it possesses a distinct graphic quality that elevates it beyond a mere reference sheet. The inclusion of the artist's monogram at the bottom provides a clear mark of authorship, typical of his limited edition prints and graphic works. This piece is an example of the clean, functionalist aesthetic that emerged in the Netherlands during the interwar period, where clarity of communication was as important as the visual impact of the printed page.

You might also like

Untitled (Introduction Page) - Wassily Kandinsky — Wassily Kandinsky
Title page from the portfolio The Transformations of God - Ernst Barlach — Ernst Barlach

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lijst-van-rugspieren-in-Duits-en-Latijn_Poster_CompositorV1_1791897652359.jpg?v=1791897765
