landscapes-of-the-four-seasons-keison
Landscapes of the Four Seasons - Keison

A traditional Japanese ink-on-silk diptych depicting mountain and water scenes, showcasing the classic sansui style through expressive brushwork.

This diptych by the Japanese artist Keison presents a traditional approach to the sansui, or mountain and water, genre. Executed in ink on silk, the work employs a monochromatic palette to define the rugged topography of the depicted terrain. The composition relies on the interplay between solid rock formations and the negative space of the water, a technique common in East Asian ink wash traditions to suggest atmospheric depth and distance.

The vertical orientation of the scrolls allows for a tiered perspective. In the foreground, small architectural structures and figures are nestled near the water's edge, providing a sense of scale against the towering, craggy peaks that dominate the upper sections. The brushwork varies from fine, controlled lines used for the architectural details to broader, more expressive strokes that define the texture of the mountains and the foliage of the trees.

These scrolls follow the thematic convention of the four seasons, a subject that allows the artist to explore shifting conditions of light and vegetation. The ink application demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation, moving from deep, saturated blacks to subtle, diluted greys. This range creates a sense of volume and form without the need for colour. The mounting of the scrolls, featuring patterned silk borders, is consistent with the presentation of high-quality Japanese hanging scrolls. The work reflects a disciplined adherence to classical ink painting techniques, prioritising the balance of composition and the evocative power of the brush stroke over realistic representation. It is a study in the harmony between human habitation and the natural world, captured through the lens of traditional East Asian aesthetic values.

You might also like

Boating beneath Echo Hill - Mei Qing — Mei Qing
Millet and Sparrows - Geiai — Geiai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscapes-of-the-Four-Seasons_Poster_CompositorV1_1791348405326.jpg?v=1791349780
