landscape-with-heron-and-boat-nishimura-shigenaga
Landscape with Heron and Boat - Nishimura Shigenaga

An early 18th-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, featuring a heron perched near a moored boat in a rural setting.

This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga captures a quiet moment by the water. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, working during the mid-Edo period. His output often included bird-and-flower subjects, which he rendered with a distinct focus on line and minimal colour application.

The composition features a heron perched atop a pole, which rises from a small boat moored near a rocky bank. In the background, two figures carrying bundles walk along a path, suggesting a rural scene. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft greens and muted ochre tones to define the natural elements. The lines are delicate, reflecting the early techniques of hand-coloured or limited-colour printing that preceded the full-colour nishiki-e style.

Shigenaga is known for his influence on later masters, including Harunobu. His approach to space and form in this work demonstrates the transition toward more atmospheric depictions in Japanese printmaking. The print maintains a sense of stillness, with the heron acting as the primary vertical element against the horizontal lines of the water and the distant horizon. The inclusion of the artist's seal at the base confirms the provenance and the period of production. This piece is an example of the early Ukiyo-e aesthetic, where the focus remains on the balance between negative space and the subject matter. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the print, providing a glimpse into the material history of 18th-century Japanese graphic arts.

You might also like

Yokkaichi: Mie River - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō: Inspired by Famous Pictures (Kanagawa) - Utagawa Kunisada — Utagawa Kunisada

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscape-with-Heron-and-Boat_Poster_CompositorV1_1790905201576.jpg?v=1790906634
